 The Hudson's Bay Company was founded in London in 1670 for the purpose of establishing a fur trade in what is now the Hudson Bay region. Today, the company ranks as one of Canada's largest corporations. It is also the oldest continuously operating company in America. |
Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La Vérendrye set out on an expedition to find a great western sea in 1731. Although his 12-year quest failed to find such a sea, it did succeed in exploring and mapping a vast stretch of what is now western Canada, and to discover the Missouri River. |
