WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON
William Henry Harrison gained fame as an Indian
fighter, especially after defeating the Shawnee Indians
at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, an accomplishment
which led to his being nicknamed "Tippecanoe."
The Whig Party first ran Harrison for President against
Democrat Martin Van Buren in
1836. He lost. They ran him again in 1840. Using
Harrison's colorful military career as their theme, the
Whigs turned the campaign into a circus and made
"Tippecanoe and Tyler too!" their rallying cry.
This time Harrison defeated Van Buren, making him the
first Whig President.
