LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON

Lyndon Johnson had spent almost 24 years in Congress, including a stint as the youngest Senate Majority Leader in U. S. history, before being elected Vice-President. As the leader of the Democratic-controlled Senate during the administration of Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Johnson was a powerful figure who shrewdly mixed the demands of party politics with a sense of cooperation between Democrats and Republicans. It was this ability that led to his being chosen as John F. Kennedy's running mate in 1960. He succeeded to the presidency upon the assassination of Kennedy on November 22, 1963.

Chronology of His Life and Career

  August 27, 1908 Born near Stonewall, Texas.
  ~1913 Moved with his family to Johnson City, Texas.
  1924 Graduated from the Johnson City High School.
  1930 Graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now Southwest Texas State University).
  1931 Went to Washington, D. C., as a congressional secretary.
  November 17, 1934 Married Claudia Alta (Lady Bird) Taylor.
  1935 Became National Youth administrator for Texas.
  1937 Elected to the U. S. House of Representatives.
  1941 Ran unsuccessfully for the U. S. Senate.
  1941-1942 Served in the U. S. Navy.
  1942 Reelected to the House.
1948 Elected to the U. S. Senate.
  1951 Elected Senate Minority Whip.
  1953 Elected Senate Minority Leader.
  1955 Elected Senate Majority Leader.
  July 1955 Suffered a severe heart attack.
  1960 Elected Vice-President of the United States.
  November 22, 1963 Became President upon the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
  1964 Elected to a full term as President.
October 8, 1965 Underwent gall bladder surgery.
June 21, 1967 His first granchild, Patrick Lyndon Nugent was born in Houston, Texas.
  1968 Announced that he would not run for reelection.
  1969 His birthplace and boyhood home became the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site.
  1971 Published his memoirs, The Vantage Point: Perspectives of the Presidency, 1963-1969.
  1971 The Lyndon B. Johnson Library opened at the University of Texas in Austin.
  January 22, 1973 Died in San Antonio, Texas.
