LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON Lyndon Johnson had spent almost 24 years in Congress, including a stint as the youngest Senate Majority Leader in U. S. history, before being elected Vice-President. As the leader of the Democratic-controlled Senate during the administration of Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Johnson was a powerful figure who shrewdly mixed the demands of party politics with a sense of cooperation between Democrats and Republicans. It was this ability that led to his being chosen as John F. Kennedy's running mate in 1960. He succeeded to the presidency upon the assassination of Kennedy on November 22, 1963.
