Dwight David Eisenhower:
President of Columbia University

In 1948, Eisenhower retired from active military duty and became president of Columbia University. He wrote a book about his World War II experiences, called Crusade in Europe, which he sold for $635,000. The book was a best-seller.

National demands kept Eisenhower from devoting himself entirely to university work. He frequently testified before congressional committees on defense policies, and advised the government on merging the War and Navy departments into the new Department of Defense. He resigned from Columbia after being nominated for the presidency in 1952.
