1524 Giovanni da
Verrazano explored the New Jersey coast.
1609 Henry Hudson
explored Sandy Hook Bay and sailed up the Hudson Bay.
~1630 The Dutch established an outpost
in Pavonia.
1660 The Dutch established a permanent
settlement at Bergen.
1664 The Dutch surrendered New Jersey to
Great Britain.
1776, July 2 New Jersey adopted its
first constitution.
1778, November 26 New Jersey ratified
the Articles
of Confederation.
1783-1784 Princeton and Trenton each
served briefly as the national capital.
1787, December 18 New Jersey became the
third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
1790 The state capital was established
at Trenton.
1844 New Jersey adopted its second
constitution.
1846 The New York Nine defeated the New
York Knickerbockers 23 to 1 in the world's first
professional baseball game, in Hoboken.
1858 The first dinosaur skeleton
discovered in North America was excavated in Haddonfield.
1869 Rutgers defeated Princeton 6 to 4
in the world's first intercollegiate football game, in
New Brunswick.
1879 Thomas
A. Edison invented the electric light bulb in Menlo
Park.
1947 New Jersey adopted its third
constitution.
1976 New Jerseyans voted to allow
gambling casinos in Atlantic City.
