Fort Duquesne was built by the French in 1755, on the site of a former British trading post. Its capture by the British in 1758 allowed the British to secure all of the lands between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes. Renamed Fort Pitt by the British, it became the namesake of the city that grew up around it. |
