Archaeological Finds in 1959

Perhaps the most spectacular chance find of the century was made at Pireaus, Greece, by workmen doing sewer repairs. Possibly the remains of a warehouse that burned down around 86 B.C., the ruins contained eight major sculptures, including five bronzes. Among the bronzes were an oversized kouros (youth), an 8-foot-high statue of Athena, a 5-foot statue of Artemis, and an oversize tragedy Mask (shown below).
