Architectural Highlights from 1958

German pavilion Part of a ship's prow stands near one of the eight pavillons constituting the German exhibit at the Brussels World's Fair. Completed in 1958, the 38-story Seagram Building in New York City, New York, is encased in tinted glass and bronze mullions and panels. Borg-Warner Completed in 1958, the Borg-Warner Building on Chicago's Michigan Avenue is directly across from the Art Institute and next to Orchestra Hall, home of Chicago's Symphony. The building's ground floor retail space is primarily dedicated to serving patrons of those artistic venues. Acapulco resort At Acapulco, Mexico, the 158-bungalow, club-type Las Brisas Hotel Resort is terraced 800 feet up on a bluff. Jeeps are used to transport guests to and from private beaches. The top of this concrete pillar at Örebro, Sweden, is 250 feet above the ground and houses a restaurant that can accomodate 150 diners on its wide, circular rim. Orebro restaurant
globular house This three-room globular house made of metal is being towed up the Thames River for display at the British Ideal Home Exhibition in London, England. The house was designed by Johann Ludovici (Germany) for use in the Belgian Congo, where rivers are the most ready means of transport. Once at its destination the house could be installed without a foundation. Weighing less than a ton, it was to be sold unfurnished for about $1,200. West Berlin Fifty years of changes in architectural style are reflected in these two blocks of apartment houses in West Berlin. A once-blighted area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is now the site of four high-rise apartments built by a private concern. Philadelphia
domed building A glass-domed building designed and erected by English architect Hugh Pope has an exterior wooden frame supporting 150 glass triangles. Queen Elizabeth Hotel The 21-story, $24-million Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Canada, accommodates 2,000 people, making it Canada's largest hotel. First Presbyterian Church Wallace K. Harrison designed the First Presbyterian Church, in Stamford, Connecticut, in sloping, linked pyramidal shapes, carrying lancets of stained glass, embedded within a pre-cast concrete frame, up to the ridge of the roof. Connecticut General Life Insurance Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and completed in 1957, the Connecticut General Life Insurance headquarters at Bloomfield, Connecticut, received an American Institute of Architects honor award in 1958. Chandrigar, India The plan for the complete redevelopment of Chandrigar, capital of Punjab State, India, was to include a number of major buildings by Swiss architect Le Corbusier, including these residences for government workers, which were completed in 1958.
