Union of African States, 1961

On July 1, 1961, Ghana, Guinea, and Mali formed a loose union that considered itself the nucleus of a broader federation.

Presidents Modibo Keita of Mali, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, and Sékou Touré of Guinea sign the "Charter of the Union of African States" in Accra, Ghana, on April 29.
