West Germany in 1959

On April 8 Chancellor Konrad Adenauer announced his intention to run for President in the July election, but the death of U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, with whom he had had a very good working relationship, and the lack of progress at the Geneva Foreign Ministers' Conference caused him to change his mind.

Chancellor Adenauer (right), Foreign Minister Heinrich von Brentano (left), and other leaders of the Christian Democratic Party held a June meeting in Bonn.
