Battle of Chateau Thierry On the morning of July 18, 1918, French and American forces between Fontenoy and Chateau Thierry, France, launched an assault on German positions. One of the first major actions undertaken by the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) took the Germans completely by surprise because the troops began their advance without a preparatory artillery bombardment, and ended with a decisive victory for the French and Americans. Artillery of the U.S. Third Division pounded
German positions as the ground troops advanced behind it.
The effects of that artillery can be seen here. American and French soldiers look over the town of
Chateau Thierry after the battle. Source Thomas H. Russell America's War for Humanity: Pictorial History of the World War for Liberty Chicago: Homewood Press, 1919 |
