The United States Economy in 1958 A
poignant sign of the business recession of 1958, these
people waited to claim unemployment insurance in New York
City, New York, in February, when U.S. unemployment was
almost 5 million. The unemployment line was also long in
Detroit, Michigan, as fewer Americans were buying new
cars in 1958. When General Electric and other
appliance manufacturers announced that they would no
longer enforce fair-trade prices, consumers saved money
